Malaysia Airlines

Flying with Malaysia Airlines

Founded in 1937, Malaysia Airlines operates from its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport plus its secondary hubs at Kuching International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport. It is the Malaysian flag carrier and has codeshare agreements with numerous airlines such as Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, KLM, American Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Malaysia Airlines had planned to collaborate with AirAsia in 2011, however a year later the decision was reversed. The company is a oneworld alliance member along with several large airlines including British Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Iberia.

It has a fleet of around 75 aircraft that fly to over 50 destinations around the world. Malaysia Airlines flights can be taken to various Australian destinations including Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. The airline also flies to the Japanese destinations of Tokyo and Osaka, in addition to the Malaysian cities of Penang and Miri.

Online check-in

Online check-in is available on all Malaysia Airlines flights. Passengers are able to check into their flight up to 48 hours before the flight departs up until 90 minutes prior to the flights scheduled takeoff time. In order to check in online, passengers must enter their flight details and booking information. Once the details about the passengers have been entered, the check-in process is complete.

After the check in has been completed, passengers have the option to change their seat if they would like to. Passengers can also print-off their boarding pass or have it sent to their mobile device. Checking in online will save time queuing at the airport.

Hand luggage allowance

The amount of hand baggage that passengers can take to a Malaysia Airlines flight depends on the type of ticket they have purchased. Economy class passengers are allowed 1 piece of baggage as long as it weighs no more than 7 kg, while First class and Business class passengers are entitled to 2 pieces of luggage each.

Hand baggage must not be larger than 55 x 35 x 25 cm, and baggage that exceeds this permitted size or weight must be checked in as hold luggage. A small personal item such as a handbag or camera may also be taken on board free of charge.

Checked baggage policy

The amount of checked baggage allowed on a Malaysia Airlines flight depends on what ticket the passenger has purchased. Economy class passengers can take 2 pieces of hold luggage weighing a combined total of 30 kg, while Business class passengers may check in 2 pieces of baggage weighing up to a combined 40 kg. First class passengers are able to take up to 50 kg.

The dimensions of the luggage should not exceed 158 cm when added together. Children are allowed 1 piece of checked luggage weighing up to 10 kg as long as the dimensions of the baggage do not exceed 115 cm when added together.
